Dragons Never Forget

Time passed in the brig at an indeterminate rate. There were no windows in the prison and so it may have been minutes or hours that the heroes had been cooped up there. What had happened with the Amazons? Jason wondered. Had Theseus and the NOPD raided the Colchis warehouse after Jason had failed to check in? The uncertainty and inability to do anything about it was killing the hero. Herk and Atlanta were both dozing in opposite corners of the cell.

“Night has come,” Medea noted ominously.

“How can you tell?” Jason asked.

“Hecate is mistress of the moon. I can feel it. She is full tonight.” Medea’s voice was wistful, yearning.

5
“You’re not a werewolf are you?” Jason asked, half joking.
Cite Permalink:
6
The pagan nun laughed. “No, but I’ve done my share of howling at the moon. Do you hear that?”
Cite Permalink:
7
He didn’t. “Hear what?” he asked.
Cite Permalink:
8
“Footsteps. Someone’s coming. Quick, pretend you’re asleep!”
Cite Permalink:
9
“What? Why?”
Cite Permalink:
10
“Just do it!” She snapped. Jason complied, dropping quickly to the ground and closing his eyes. A second later he also heard the footsteps: one set of them, wearing heavy-duty boots. They got closer and closer, finally stopping in front of Medea’s cell.

“Abi!” Medea exclaimed.
Cite Permalink:
12
“Shhhh,” her brother cautioned. “I don’t want to wake your hero friends.” There was a clink and click followed by the sound of the cell door swinging open. “Come with me, quickly.”
Cite Permalink:
13
“Abi, what about Father? He’s going to be furious if he finds out you helped me escape.”
Cite Permalink:
14
“I don’t care. You’re my big sister. I’m not going to let you rot here like a criminal. Now come on! We don’t have much time. I’ve got a speedboat ready that you can use to take back to the city, but you have to go now!” Two sets of footsteps raced their way out of the jail.

It felt like an hour passed before Medea returned, as Jason had hoped she would. She’d changed her clothes and was now dressed in the red uniform of Colchis. In one hand was a set of keys, under the other arm a stack of red fabric.

16
“Man, am I glad to see you,” Jason said exhaling with relief.
Cite Permalink:
17
“Put these on,” she said, tossing the trio their own set of red uniforms. The heroes stripped out of their wetsuits and donned the Colchis suits. “Herk, yours might be a little tight. I grabbed the biggest one I could find.”

18
“I’ll suck it in,” he told her as she unlocked the cell door.
Cite Permalink:
19
“I could kiss you,” Jason announced as he walked free from the cell and over to his rescuer. Instead of greeting him with a kiss, she slapped the hero across the face. “I deserved that,” he admitted.
Cite Permalink:
20
“That was for saying that this was too dangerous for me. How many times do I have to save your ass before you realize that I’m just as capable as you?”
Cite Permalink:
21
“I’m sorry,” Jason apologized.
Cite Permalink:
22
Medea considered the apology for a second and then promptly kneed the hero in the groin. Jason bowled over in pain. “And that was for telling my father that I seduced you, you self-centered ass.”
Cite Permalink:
23
“I like your style, girl,” Atlanta complimented her as she stepped out of the cell.
Cite Permalink:
24
Herk was not as impressed. “Just so I’m sure, you’re still planning on double-crossing us, right? Not that I’m not grateful for the escape.”
Cite Permalink:
25
“Let’s worry about getting the Fleece away from my father first,” Medea told them. “We can quibble about who gets to keep it later. Follow me.” She led Herk and Atlanta down the hallway. After a few steps, she turned back to Jason, who was still bent over in pain. “Are you coming or not, lover boy?”
Cite Permalink:
26
The hero waved her off. “I’ll catch up,” he responded. “I just need a second to make sure you didn’t do any permanent damage down here.”
Cite Permalink:
27
The brig was eerily empty. “Where are all the guards?” Herk asked as they exited the building.
Cite Permalink:
28
“Abi pulled them off the building so he could smuggle me out,” she responded.
Cite Permalink:
29
“And what about your brother?” Jason asked. “How did you get away from him?”
Cite Permalink:
30
“Don’t worry about him,” Medea told the hero. “He thinks that I’m already on my way back to New Olympus. We need to get to the Grove and get the Fleece now. Prometheus was right. My father is going to sacrifice the Fleece to Ares.”
Cite Permalink:
31
“Like god of war Ares? That Ares?” Atlanta asked.
Cite Permalink:
32
Medea nodded. “This entire ship is one big temple to him.”
Cite Permalink:
33
“I think that on the list of gods we want to invite back, he isn’t at the top,” Jason commented.
Cite Permalink:
34
“How do we even get to the Fleece?” Atlanta asked. “We’ve got to get through two fire-breathing bulls and a dragon. Then we have to get a very conspicuous golden ram off this barge, which just happens to be filled with lots and lots of heavily armed soldiers.”
Cite Permalink:
35
“Don’t be so negative,” Jason told the heroine. “We are members of the New Olympus Heroes Union. This is our bread and butter. Herk, you fought the Nemean lion. Atlanta, you killed the Caledonian boar. Yes, I admitted it, please stop gloating. I don’t think two little metal bulls should be too much trouble for you two.”
Cite Permalink:
36
The other heroes perked up, their morale improving by leaps and bounds. “What about the dragon?” Herk asked.
Cite Permalink:
37
“You let Medea and I worry about the dragon,” Jason responded, as they stealthily headed down the streets of the war barge. As Atlanta and Herk went ahead and took point, Jason turned to Medea. “I really hope you have a plan for the dragon.”
Cite Permalink:
38
“Let’s hope she remembers her childhood owner,” was all she said in response.
Cite Permalink:
39
Ducking into alleyways and dodging roaming patrols, the group made their way back to the Grove without being discovered. Six Colchis soldiers stood guard at the gate of the arboretum. Aetes wasn’t taking any chances. The guards looked nervous; they’d been told the importance of their duties and it was weighing heavily on them.
Cite Permalink:
40
“They look twitchy,” Herk noted as they crouched behind a stack of crates, surveying the situation.
Cite Permalink:
41
“Trigger happy,” Atlanta commented. She turned to Jason. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
Cite Permalink:
42
Jason nodded. “Does anyone have something I can throw? Like a rock or something?”
Cite Permalink:
43
“How about this?” Medea offered, handing him a small, oblong device.
Cite Permalink:
44
He snatched the device out of her hand eagerly. “Where did you find a flash grenade?”
Cite Permalink:
45
“I am a woman of many talents,” she replied mysteriously.
Cite Permalink:
46
“Everyone cover their eyes!” Jason pulled the pin on the grenade and lobbed it directly in front of the guards. There was a blinding flash of light, followed by a flurry of gunfire and then a host of screams and howls of pain. When the heroes looked again, the guards were on the ground, clutching at wounds inflicted by their compatriots in the confusion. The foursome rushed over to the injured soldiers and quickly disarmed them. “That’s the danger of playing with automatic weapons,” Jason noted. It was more firepower than the mercenaries could handle.
Cite Permalink:
47
“Get them inside,” Jason ordered. “Someone was bound to have heard that gunfire.” They dragged the guards into the Grove and closed the doors behind them. “Look at that.” Jason pointed to the walls of the Grove. The walls appeared to be made of glass, but they had suffered several shots during the impromptu firefight and there was barely a scratch on the wall. “The walls are bulletproof. Grab those rifles and use them to barricade the doors.” They wouldn’t hold against any true show of force, but it might buy them a few minutes.

The Grove was just as majestic at night as it was during the day. The full moon shined brightly through the clear ceiling, bathing the entire area in a spooky, almost mystical light. Many of the plants and flowers took on an ethereal glow.
Cite Permalink:
49
“Everyone stay close together,” Medea warned. “If there are as many dangerous animals in here as my father claims there are, we need to keep our eyes open.”
Cite Permalink:
50
The group forged forward through the wooded area, making their way ever closer to their goal in the middle of the Grove.
Cite Permalink:
51
“Maybe the bulls will be sleeping,” Atlanta suggested hopefully as they approached the barn that served as the bronze livestock’s home.
Cite Permalink:
52
“Nice thought,” Jason replied as he could already see the glowing nostrils of two bulls ahead. It was almost as if the beasts had been waiting for the heroes.
Cite Permalink:
53
“You two get ready to go ahead,” Herk told Jason and Medea. “We’ve got these guys. A, give me your shirt.”
Cite Permalink:
54
“Use your own, perv.”
Cite Permalink:
55
“It was worth a try.” Herk took the blonde by the shoulders. “Look, in case we don’t survive this, ah heck,” he said and planted a kiss right on the heroine’s lips.
Cite Permalink:
56
She quickly pushed the strongman away. “You better hope you don’t survive this or I’m going to kill you myself.” She turned and faced one of the approaching bulls. “Come on, beastie. Do you think you can catch the world’s fastest woman?”
Cite Permalink:
57
Meanwhile Herk had peeled off his tight Colchis uniform and was waving it in front of him like a matador. The bull started digging into the ground with its front hoof, smoke flowing from its nostrils. He charged, flames jetting forward at the strongman. Herk deftly dodged the bull and as it rushed past him he jumped upon the bronze beast’s back, wrapping his huge hands around the bull’s monstrous neck. From there it became a rodeo, as the bull bucked and bucked, trying to throw Herk of its back.
Cite Permalink:
58
Atlanta raced off into the woods with the second bull pursuing. In a foot race Atlanta was unparalleled. She’d defeated women, men, and animals in such contests in the past, and Jason suspected that this time would be no different.

“This is our chance,” he told Medea and the duo moved forward down the path. They arrived at the opening at the center of the grove. The Fleece was awake and stared curiously at the pair approached cautiously; Surprise was also awake and had her eyes fixed on Jason and Medea. The moonlight reflected off the ram’s golden wool and lit up the entire opening in glorious fashion.
Cite Permalink:
60
Medea took another tentative step forward and the dragon pulled itself up on its haunches, putting one of its front legs over the ram protectively.
Cite Permalink:
61
“Easy there, girl.” Medea slowly reached into her shirt and pulled out her necklace. It was a plain black string with a tooth hanging from the end. “Do you remember me?” The dragon eyed the tooth and leaned over to the nun. Medea flinched, but didn’t recoil. “This was yours,” she continued, her voice soft, “back when both of us were much smaller.” There was a flicker of recognition in the giant lizard’s eyes, and it made a sound that was somewhere between a shriek and a coo.
Cite Permalink:
62
“That was a happy sound, right?” Jason asked nervously.
Cite Permalink:
63
Medea, still moving slowly and methodically, reached out and placed her hand on the dragon’s head. Surprise shriek/cooed again—this time it started to resemble a bit of a purr. Medea began to stroke the dragon’s head. “I’ve missed you, Surprise,” she told the dragon affectionately. She began to hum softly and then began to sing.
Cite Permalink:
64
It was a song Jason knew well. He’d heard it less than twenty-four hours ago at Club Nyx. And while her version of “Don’t Look Back” was not as haunting as Orpheus’ version, it was beautiful. Medea had a sweet, soulful, and melodious voice. The dragon began to nuzzle up against her former owner, and as she did so, her grasp on the Fleece loosened.
Cite Permalink:
65
Jason took the opportunity to move closer to the golden ram. He beckoned to the sheep quietly. “Here sheepy, sheepy,” he called softly. The ram looked back at him but did not get up. “Come on, come on,” he called a little more forcefully. He should have thought this part of the rescue through a little more thoroughly. The Fleece looked comfortable; how was he supposed to get it to come along with him?
Cite Permalink:
66
He took one step closer, and it was one step too many. Surprise caught the hero trying to creep toward the ram and moved into defensive position. She clutched the ram in one of her claws and took Medea in the other. With a shriek that sounded nothing like a coo, the dragon reared back. Her wings stretched out from her body and began to flap, causing the leaves in the nearby oak trees to shake. The sight was both terrible and beautiful.
Cite Permalink:
67
“Jason!” Medea called as the dragon took to the air with her in tow. Jason leapt at the beast and managed to get his hands around her neck before she was out of reach. Struggling to maintain his grasp, the hero pulled himself up onto the beast’s neck. The dragon shook wildly, trying to throw Jason to the ground, and began to circle the opening with Jason, Medea, and the Fleece all along for the ride.
Cite Permalink:
68
“Keep singing,” Jason called to Medea. “Maybe she’ll settle down again.” The ceiling of the Grove was high, but not that high, and the hero worried that they would crash into it if they kept gaining altitude.
Cite Permalink:
69
Medea belted out another verse of Orpheus’ sad tune, her voicing cracking as she sang. Surprise snarled and spat a viscous green liquid at the ceiling. The liquid hit the glass and it fizzed and dissolved with a hiss. Apparently the glass was bulletproof but not dragon-proof.
Cite Permalink:
70
They crashed through the new gap in the ceiling and soared into the open sky above the war barge. Away from the tight confines of the Grove, Surprise seemed to calm down a little. Medea managed to wriggle free from the dragon’s claw and, with Jason’s help, pulled herself up on to the base of the lizard’s neck with the hero. They both straddled the dragon and held on for dear life.
Cite Permalink:
71
“Any chance you rode her when you were little?” Jason asked.
Cite Permalink:
72
Medea nodded, still singing at the top of her lungs.
Cite Permalink:
73
Below them, the deck of the barge had lit up. Their flight had not gone unnoticed on the ground. Colchis guards had begun to spread out across the barge. “We need to either get higher or get out over the water. Does she come with a user’s manual?”
Cite Permalink:
74
Medea stretched out and laid her chest down on the dragon’s long neck. As she sang, she rubbed her former pet’s scaly neck gently. Using her hands and tapping the beast lightly with her feet, she guided Surprise up and away from the barge.
Cite Permalink:
75
“Where to, hero?” she asked Jason, finally comfortable that she had the dragon under control. Jason was torn between getting the Fleece to safety and going back for his friends. Herk and Atlanta were heroes—they could handle themselves for a little bit longer.
Cite Permalink:
76
“Let’s get the Fleece to safety.”
Cite Permalink:
77
“But where is safe? My father will follow us wherever we go.”
Cite Permalink:
78
“There are a couple people that I think even Aetes will think twice before crossing. Head west, toward the Underworld. We’re taking the Fleece to Hades.”
Cite Permalink:
79
Medea guided the giant lizard across the water, back to the shore of New Olympus where the mouth of the Styx River separated the Underworld from the respectable part of the city. Following the river, they glided deeper into the city, until finally circling the club that served as the capital of the seedy underbelly that was the New Olympus Underworld.

While the nun of Hecate guided the dragon down, Surprise was very protective of the golden ram in her custody, placing the Fleece gently on the ground as they landed. The golden animal shook itself off much like a dog would after a bath. They had landed right in front of the front door of Nyx, and found themselves face to face with Cerberus, the snarling three headed guard dog and doorman. The mangy cur barked ferociously with all three heads, literally foaming at the mouth. Surprise responded by letting loose a monstrous roar, aimed directly at the oversized bulldog. Cerberus crumpled up like a scolded puppy and with a sad, scared whimper, turned tail and dashed inside the club. Surprise snorted in satisfaction.

Hades arrived at the front door of the club a few minutes later, flanked by two of his henchmen. “Who dares to frighten my poor little pooch?” he bristled. “Cerberus just peed on my new area rug.” It was only then that he saw who his visitors were. “Oh, hello again, Jason.” Hades looked impressed as he surveyed the scene. “I must say, you heroes know how to do things in style. A dragon, a beautiful woman, and the Golden Fleece? Is it my birthday?”
Cite Permalink:
82
“I need you to watch the Fleece, Hades.”
Cite Permalink:
83
“That’s awfully trusting of you, hero,” the crime lord said suspiciously.
Cite Permalink:
84
“Baron Nikolas Aetes and the Colchis Corporation are the ones that took the Fleece.”
Cite Permalink:
85
“So I’ve heard.”
Cite Permalink:
86
“They have an armory by the docks and an army waiting on a barge in the Bay of Poseidon. I figured they’d be less likely to invade New Olympus if I put the Fleece in the middle of gangland here. The amount of weapons per capita is notably higher in this part of town than in others.”
Cite Permalink:
87
“And if this Aetes does decide to attack, you won’t exactly be torn up about the collateral damage here,” Hades noted pointedly.
Cite Permalink:
88
“I won’t shed any tears for any criminals or monsters that get in Aetes’ way, if that’s what you’re asking,” Jason told him. “But I don’t think it will come to that. I think you’ve got enough motivation yourself to keep the Fleece safe. You really don’t want any of your relatives coming back to town, do you?”
Cite Permalink:
89
Hades perked up. “So, you’ve been talking to Prometheus, have you?”
Cite Permalink:
90
“Let’s just say that Aetes is a big fan of Ares.”
Cite Permalink:
91
Hades snorted. “He must be the only one. Ares is a petulant bully. Certainly not one of my family members I’m looking forward to having a reunion with. I’ll keep an eye our little lost sheep for you.”
Cite Permalink:
92
“Just in case, we brought a babysitter,” Jason noted, pointing over his shoulder at the looming dragon.
Cite Permalink:
93
“And just what will you be doing in the meantime?” Hades asked.
Cite Permalink:
94
“I’ve got to go convince Aetes that New Olympus is not a city he wants to plant a flag in.”
Cite Permalink:
95
“Do you need anything?”
Cite Permalink:
96
“A phone—and all the explosives you’ve got.”
