Circe’s World Renowned Ham Sandwiches

“She’s a spy!” Pelias was livid.
Cite Permalink:
2
“She’s not a spy,” Jason replied. They were still in the security office, arguing over Talos’ corpse. Jason had called him down to see what sort of policy OLI had for deceased employees.
Cite Permalink:
3
“Then you’re a fool.”
Cite Permalink:
4
“She saved my life, Pelias.”
Cite Permalink:
5
“She killed a co-conspirator before he could rat her out.”
Cite Permalink:
6
“He was choking me to death! It didn’t look or feel like he was ready to confess anything. Besides, she admitted who she was as soon as we heard about Colchis.”
Cite Permalink:
7
Pelias crossed his arms across his chest, not convinced. “Don’t you think it’s a little convenient that she showed up when she did?”
Cite Permalink:
8
His uncle did have a point, Jason begrudgingly considered. She had arrived out of the blue at Nyx right before the Sirens had attacked. But she’d also saved him then, before he’d even known he was in danger.
Cite Permalink:
9
“Excuse me?” Medea chimed in. “Could we maybe stop talking about me as if I wasn’t in the room?”
Cite Permalink:
10
Jason nodded. “All I’m saying, is that if Medea is a spy—and of course I don’t think you are—then wouldn’t it make more sense to keep her close and keep an eye on her rather than send her back to her father with everything she knows now?”
Cite Permalink:
11
“There are other ways of containing this,” Pelias, said menacingly. “Permanent ways.”
Cite Permalink:
12
“This is my quest, Pelias,” Jason warned him. “We do things my way. Think of her as bait,” he suggested, then flashed a glance at Medea. “Really, really hot bait.”
Cite Permalink:
13
“Wonderful,” Medea noted darkly. “What an overwhelming vote of confidence.”
Cite Permalink:
14
Tilting his head at the bronze corpse, Jason asked, “What do we do about this guy?”
Cite Permalink:
15
“If you go to the police, it blows this thing wide open. The Fleece will be on the front page of tomorrow’s Torch,” Medea argued.
Cite Permalink:
16
“Yet how quickly we start wanting to cut corners. So that is one vote for a cover up,” Pelias tallied. “How about people who didn’t kill Talos?” Medea started to protest but instead grabbed the nail gun playfully.
Cite Permalink:
17
“Why stop at one?” she said.
Cite Permalink:
18
“Alright, both of you stop!” Jason intervened. “This is not productive. Pelias, you need to call the police—but Medea and I can’t still be here when they arrive. Theseus is looking for a reason to throw my ass in jail, and I won’t be able to get to the bottom of all of this from a prison cell.” Though that was a part of his plan earlier in the evening. He wondered if Theseus was still handcuffed in Yu’s apartment. He looked to Medea. “Do you know a safe place in town where we can stay tonight? Theseus will be looking for us at my place and at the Argo.”
Cite Permalink:
19
Medea responded with a pout. “Yes, but know that I may hate you.”
Cite Permalink:
20
“Fair enough. We’ll clean up any of the evidence that links this back to us and get out of here.” To Pelias, “Can you wait until after we leave to call the NOPD?”
Cite Permalink:
21
He nodded. “You better find the Fleece soon, Jason. I’m meeting with the board tomorrow afternoon and if this thing has broken to the press before then…” he trailed off ominously.
Cite Permalink:
22
“I’ll talk to Prometheus in the morning. He still owes Herk a favor. We’ll put some pressure on him and try to keep this out of the press for another day. One other thing: could you get me a shirt? Mine is covered with dead guy’s blood.” Jason suddenly started to feel woozy. He just now realized that finding Mel dead, escaping the Sirens, being held up by the Amazons, and nearly being choked to death by Talos had done a number on him. He needed a few hours of sleep.
Cite Permalink:
23
“So where are we going?” Jason asked Medea twenty minutes later as they hailed down a cab in front of the OLI building.
Cite Permalink:
24
“I’m not talking to you.”
Cite Permalink:
25
“I stuck up for you!”
Cite Permalink:
26
“Not enough! I shot a guy with a nail gun for you, and you follow up by calling me bait!”
Cite Permalink:
27
Really hot bait, he almost corrected her but held off as he realized it would only hurt his case. Instead he said, “Look, how do I make this up to you?”
Cite Permalink:
28
“Stop thinking that I might be a spy, for starters!” she exclaimed.
Cite Permalink:
29
“I don’t. Seriously.” In reality, Jason still wasn’t sure what to think. He did know that he wanted to stay on Medea’s good side and at the same time not let her out of his sight. “With Herk watching over Orpheus and Atlanta in jail, you’re the only person I’ve got watching my back, and so I’ve got to trust you. Do you trust me?”
Cite Permalink:
30
She put her hand in his. “I want to. I really want to trust you.”
Cite Permalink:
31
“Then maybe you could let me know where we’re going,” Jason responded.
Cite Permalink:
32
“We’re going to the only safe place I know in New Olympus.” She directed the cabbie to a location just barely inside the city limits, on the way to the northern border of town. The area looked more like the surrounding suburbs than the rest of the city, featuring houses with big yards, strip malls, and heavily wooded sections. “It’s right up here on the right,” she told the cabbie. The car pulled into the parking lot of a quaint little bed and breakfast.
Cite Permalink:
33
“This is a romantic little hideaway,” Jason commented.
Cite Permalink:
34
“I know,” Medea responded. “All I need is a nail gun and some whipped cream and I’m ready for a good time.” Jason was relieved that she could joke about the incident already. The woman was turning out to be as strong as she was beautiful, he was coming to learn.
Cite Permalink:
35
A middle-aged woman was waiting for the duo at the door. She look familiar to Jason, but perhaps it was because she bore a strong resemblance to Medea, only about thirty years older. Her hair was a dark, free flowing curly mass, and she had a patterned flowing dress to match.
Cite Permalink:
36
“Two questions,” Jason asked. “One, is that your mom? And two, is she a hippie?”
Cite Permalink:
37
Medea let out a little giggle. “My mother died when I was little. Circe here is a sister in my order. She’s the last of our kind in New Olympus.”
Cite Permalink:
38
Jason paused. He did recognize the older woman. “Circe? As in, Circe the witch?”
Cite Permalink:
39
“I told you I didn’t like that word,” Medea replied harshly. “It’s offensive.”
Cite Permalink:
40
“You do know that she’s wanted by authorities for over a hundred cases of transmutation and animorphism over the last two decades?”
Cite Permalink:
41
“That’s nonsense,” Medea scoffed. “Nobody has performed either of those rituals in forty years.”
Cite Permalink:
42
Jason rebutted, “I know two guys personally that she turned into livestock.”
Cite Permalink:
43
“No you don’t.”
Cite Permalink:
44
“Well, a friend of mine does.”
Cite Permalink:
45
“Well, put your urban legend version of her away for the night and try to get to know the real Circe. She’s actually a pretty awesome person.” She walked up the front steps and embraced the older woman heartily. “You have no idea how happy I am to see you,” Medea told her. She introduced Jason. “This is Jason. We’re working together on a…”
Cite Permalink:
46
“A quest,” Jason finished. “Pleased to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Cite Permalink:
47
“From Medea or from the mainstream media?” the older witch asked.
Cite Permalink:
48
“A little from column A, a little from column B,” Jason admitted. “She,” he said, pointing at Medea, “I know I can trust. The New Olympus Torch? I don’t put a lot of stock in their reporting. I mean, they claim that Fay Minos had a baby with a bull.”
Cite Permalink:
49
Circe smiled warmly at the hero. “Your words are very kind, Jason. Though I must tell you, the Minos story is true. Fay is an old friend of mine and I was actually the midwife for her delivery.”
Cite Permalink:
50
Jason’s jaw dropped. “You’re kidding.” Circe shook her head. “I have to call Herk.”
Cite Permalink:
51
“Later, Jason,” Medea told him gently but firmly.
Cite Permalink:
52
The hero looked back and forth between the two women. “How?” was all Jason could muster.
Cite Permalink:
53
“Well,” Circe started. “When a woman and a bull love each other very much…”
Cite Permalink:
54
“Very funny.”
Cite Permalink:
55
“You asked,” Circe responded with a wry smile. “I apologize if I am revealing that I also know you, Jason, but isn’t your stepfather a centaur?” Jason nodded. Chiron, the man who’d raised the hero after his parents had died, was born with the head and torso of a man but the body of a horse. “Then I don’t understand your confusion with the birds and the bees. Even the cliché speaks to interspecies breeding.”
Cite Permalink:
56
“I just always assumed that both of Chiron’s parents were centaurs. Huh.” Jason considered that. “That’s kind of awful,” he decided aloud.
Cite Permalink:
57
“It is nature,” replied Circe, shrugging her shoulders.
Cite Permalink:
58
“What happens if a centaur makes a baby with a human? Is it one third horse and two thirds human? Or it is one quarter horse and three quarters human?”
Cite Permalink:
59
“Goddess,” Medea swore. “Focus, Jason, focus. Let’s not forget that we’re probably on the run from the police—who you made a point of antagonizing earlier tonight.” It had seemed like a good idea at the time.
Cite Permalink:
60
Circe arched an eyebrow – it looked eerily similar to when Medea made the same expression. “On the run from the police?”
Cite Permalink:
61
“Yeah, about that,” Medea told her. “We need a room to crash in for the night while a couple things blow over.”
Cite Permalink:
62
“Anything you need, little sister. My house is your house. Business is tight right now, so I have plenty of space. You two look famished; can I prepare something? I was about to go fix myself a sandwich.”
Cite Permalink:
63
Jason’s stomach grumbled in response. He hadn’t eaten anything since early in the afternoon. “A sandwich would be great.”
Cite Permalink:
64
“You two go ahead,” Medea told them. “I’m going to go upstairs and draw a bath. Dodging death all night seems to have left me sweaty and a little filthy.”
Cite Permalink:
65
“I’ll have some fresh clothes sent up.” Circe turned back to Jason. “Shall we?” She led him into a large kitchen—larger than a normal household kitchen but smaller than a restaurant’s industrial kitchen. Everything in the kitchen looked extremely fresh—from the milk to the fresh baked cookies and bread to the thick sliced ham. Circe took two slices of bread, piled a generous amount of ham in between them, and handed the sandwich to Jason. “What do you think?” she asked.
Cite Permalink:
66
The hero took a bite. It was the best tasting ham Jason had ever consumed. “This is amazing,” he told her between bites. “Where did you get this?”
Cite Permalink:
67
“From here,” she declared. “Everything is freshly grown or raised here—either in the gardens or the stables behind the inn.”
Cite Permalink:
68
Jason was devouring the sandwich and was about halfway finished when he realized that there were serious implications to consuming Circe’s ‘locally grown and raised’ food. He gulped down the ham in his mouth and suddenly felt ill. The witch noticed his expression change and laughed a little. “Don’t worry,” she told him. “It’s no one you know.” The hero gagged a little. “And don’t worry about me turning you into a pig either,” she continued. “I saw the way Medea looked at you back there. She would not be pleased if I added you to my herd.”
Cite Permalink:
69
The hero felt as if Medea had just saved his skin another time, and this time without even being in the room. “She’s a pretty special woman,” Jason said with genuine admiration.
Cite Permalink:
70
“You don’t know the half of it,” Circe told him. “I won’t be offended if you don’t finish the sandwich but at least eat the cookies. I baked them this afternoon and can guarantee none of the ingredients are or ever were human.”
Cite Permalink:
71
He cautiously took a bite out of the chocolate chip cookie. It was also delicious.
Cite Permalink:
72
“Go to her,” Circe said simply. “She needs someone right now.”
Cite Permalink:
73
Jason finished the cookie and downed the glass of milk (he tried hard not to think about where it may have come from) and then headed upstairs to the suite.
Cite Permalink:
74
Medea’s bra and underwear were resting just outside the cracked bathroom door. Steam crept out like vaporous vines through the crack.
Cite Permalink:
75
“That you, Jason?” Medea called from the tub.
Cite Permalink:
76
“Yeah.”
Cite Permalink:
77
“Can you come in here? I could use some help with a couple hard to reach places.”
Cite Permalink:
78
Jason entered the steamy bathroom as casually as a man can enter a room when he knows a beautiful woman is naked inside. Medea was reclining in the large tub, her body submerged so that only her shoulders, neck, and head were above the water line. “I can already see that you’ve missed a few spots, but I won’t get a good sense of how bad it is until I get in there and investigate,” he noted.
Cite Permalink:
79
“Well then get in here and investigate,” she told him.
Cite Permalink:
80
Jason was out of his shirt and pants in a blink of an eye. “Are you sure that this doesn’t conflict with any of your nunly duties?” he asked before stripping down the rest of the way. “I don’t want to offend your goddess.”
Cite Permalink:
81
Medea laughed. “For starters, I’m pretty sure that nunly is not a word. Second, I already told you, I didn’t take a vow of chastity.” She sat up in the tub, revealing quite a bit more than her shoulders. “Hecate already has both my mind and soul. Tonight, you can have my body.”
Cite Permalink:
82
Cite Permalink:
83
Jason awoke the next morning at peace and relaxed, despite the short amount of rest he’d actually gotten the night before. The feeling of peace was short-lived. He rolled over to check on Medea and found that she was not in bed next to him. He noticed one other thing when he rolled over—one of his hands was handcuffed to the bed.
Cite Permalink:
84
“Medea,” he called, “I’m not sure what gave you this idea last night, but I’m not really into the whole bondage thing.”
Cite Permalink:
85
He heard the sound of a flushing toilet. A moment later, a figure emerged from the bathroom. It wasn’t Medea.
Cite Permalink:
86
“Doesn’t feel so great when the shoe is on the other foot, eh Jason?” Detective Theseus declared, with a wicked grin plastered on his face.
Cite Permalink:
87
“Theseus,” Jason said between clenched teeth. “How did you find us?”
Cite Permalink:
88
“I’m a detective, I detected.”
Cite Permalink:
89
“Where’s Medea?”
Cite Permalink:
90
“Is that your girlfriend’s name? I don’t think I ever got it earlier. You must have scared her off. When I got here you were asleep, all by your lonesome. In fact, you were the only person in the entire building. I’m not sure how they manage to keep this bed and breakfast open with no staff.”
Cite Permalink:
91
So Circe was gone too. Had both of the women betrayed him? No one else knew they were here, not Herk or the twins. Jason was out of plays—so it was time to play nice.
Cite Permalink:
92
“You’ve got me, Theseus,” he told the cop while raising his one free hand over his head. “So what are you going to do with me?”
Cite Permalink:
93
“I haven’t decided yet. I’m pretty sure you had nothing to do with Mel’s death—we released Atlanta this morning, by the way—but at the same time there was also a mysterious death at OLI last night. Their chief of security was killed with a nail gun.”
Cite Permalink:
94
“Isn’t it his job to make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen?” Jason asked the detective.
Cite Permalink:
95
Theseus couldn’t help but grin at that one, but his expression turned back into a scowl quickly. “The scene was clean—no evidence that will generate any good leads. But then I thought: what was Jason telling me about that case of his? OLI, right? What are the chances that a murder occurs at OLI while you’re working a case there—and that Pelias himself is the one calling it in?”
Cite Permalink:
96
Jason decided it wiser to keep his mouth shut. Theseus continued. “Pelias seems more the type to frame you for something like this, but I’ve got to ask. Is this one mess he’s cleaning up for you?”
Cite Permalink:
97
“Look, Theseus. Either arrest me with your circumstantial evidence and personal prejudice or let us both get back to our jobs. Neither of us is doing a particularly good job right now.”
Cite Permalink:
98
“I just want you to tell me what’s going on. We’re supposed to be on the same side, remember?”
Cite Permalink:
99
“It’s been a long time since we were on the same side, Theseus.”
Cite Permalink:
100
“I’m trying to help you here, and more importantly, help the people of New Olympus.”
Cite Permalink:
101
Jason wasn’t sure how to respond. “Really?” was all he could ask.
Cite Permalink:
102
“Really. That’s your problem, Jason. You’re probably the second smartest guy I know, but you have this list of people you’ve got grievances with and you keep sabotaging yourself by going after them instead finding the best way to finish your quest.”
Cite Permalink:
103
That made a lot of sense, but it was coming from Theseus so something had to be wrong with that statement. “Is this because I left you handcuffed in Yu’s apartment?” the hero asked.
Cite Permalink:
104
“You bet your ass it is!” Theseus exclaimed. “That’s a perfect example. Just like I’m guessing that whatever this thing you’re doing for OLI, you’re going try and hurt Pelias with it.”
Cite Permalink:
105
That was also true. It was amazing the kind of characteristics one could admit about themselves when chained to a bed.
Cite Permalink:
106
“Maybe it’s time for the past to be the past and we focus on the present instead,” Theseus said.
Cite Permalink:
107
Jason thought about it. “Ok, I’m in. Uncuff me and I’ll tell you what the quest is about.”
Cite Permalink:
108
Theseus popped the key in the lock and turned, freeing Jason. Jason sat up in bed and rubbed his chafed wrist. While his guard was down for a second, the cop clocked him with a punch right across the chin.
Cite Permalink:
109
“Ow! What was that for?” Jason rubbed his chin gingerly.
Cite Permalink:
110
“That was for kissing Lyta last night.”
Cite Permalink:
111
“I was tied to a chair and she kissed me! That’s not really fair.”
Cite Permalink:
112
“I don’t care.”
Cite Permalink:
113
“And that was a cheap shot.”
Cite Permalink:
114
“I don’t care.”
Cite Permalink:
115
“Just so long as you know.”
Cite Permalink:
116
“Are you going to talk or am I going to have to handcuff you again?”
Cite Permalink:
117
Jason held his hands in front of his. “I’m talking, I’m talking. Just don’t punch me again. These rugged good looks are as important to my heroic status as my brains are.” He launched into the story. “It’s the Golden Fleece. Someone stole it.”
Cite Permalink:
118
“What? Who? How? When?” Theseus asked, suddenly very interested in any and everything Jason had to say.
Cite Permalink:
119
“All questions I’ve been trying to answer. Here’s what I know: a little over twenty-four hours ago the Fleece was taken from its vault in the basement of OLI, days before it was scheduled to be sheared. We’re not sure exactly who was involved, but it’s probably that the thief Autolycus did the actual sheep nabbing, with help from certain high-ranking members of the OLI security staff, and we think they framed Yu Phemus.”
Cite Permalink:
120
“And Autolycus is dead, and so is the OLI security head. Any idea who’s behind this?” Theseus seemed almost wistful. He obviously missed the kind of action that heroes see.
Cite Permalink:
121
“We think it might be an organization called the Colchis Corporation. They make guns and hire guns-for-hire and apparently they want a piece of the pie that is New Olympus.”
Cite Permalink:
122
“That name sounds familiar. I can’t figure out where I know it from, though. What does Mel’s murder have to do with any of this?”
Cite Permalink:
123
“I don’t know yet. But he was killed in the same way Autolycus was, so they have to be connected, right? Theseus, I can’t tell you how important it is that we keep this story contained. If it gets out to the public that the Fleece is missing…”
Cite Permalink:
124
“People will think OLI is going under and that everyone is losing their jobs.” OLI made everything in New Olympus: from the cars people drove to the food people ate to the energy that powered their homes. “I agree with you. For once. What’s your next move?”
Cite Permalink:
125
“I’m going to get Herk and we’re going to convince Prometheus not to run a story about all of this in the Torch. Then I find out all I can on Colchis.”
Cite Permalink:
126
Theseus headed to the door. “I’ll see what I can find out about them in the meantime. I know a couple other excommunicated union members that were doing mercenary work. I’ll reach out.” He paused. “Before you do anything, you might want to put some clothes on.”
Cite Permalink:
127
Jason had forgotten he was naked. That was awkward. “Thanks, Theseus.”
Cite Permalink:
128
“Sure thing, Jason. Who knows, maybe we can start working together more often.”
Cite Permalink:
129
“Don’t get your hopes up. I still hate you, and I’m not looking to become one of New Olympus’ finest.”
Cite Permalink:
130
“Good, you wouldn’t last two days on the force.” Theseus opened the door to exit but was met by a large ceramic vase, which smashed over his head. The cop dropped to the ground, stunned but not unconscious. “What the f**k was that?”
Cite Permalink:
131
“Oh crap.” It was Medea on the other end of the door. “At least it wasn’t a nail gun this time.” She pursed her lips for a second. “Definitely should not have said that in front of a cop. Crap again.” She looked around the room for something else to hit Theseus with. “Maybe if I club him again, he won’t remember any of this.”
Cite Permalink:
132
“By saying it out loud, it becomes premeditated assault,” Theseus groaned. With a hand on his forehead, he struggled to get onto his feet.
Cite Permalink:
133
“Is premeditated assault really a thing?” Jason asked. “I thought that was just for murder.”
Cite Permalink:
134
“I’m sorry?” Medea tried to apologize halfheartedly. “I came back from a walk and heard voices arguing and I thought Jason might be in trouble. It took me a couple minutes to find a weapon.”
Cite Permalink:
135
“In those couple minutes, Theseus and I actually made up,” Jason told her.
Cite Permalink:
136
“I take it back, we are totally unmade up,” Theseus said.
Cite Permalink:
137
“It was seriously an accident. And self defense. Just like the thing with Talos,” Medea reasoned.
Cite Permalink:
138
“Please stop talking, or I will arrest you for murder, and assault, and annoying me, and whatever else I can think of at the time.”
Cite Permalink:
139
“Medea, we should probably go, while we can. Have you seen my pants?”
